Addressing Sciatic Pain: Start Early for Best Results

Lower back pain is bad enough. Now imagine that pain radiating down through your buttocks and into your leg. Maybe your leg becomes numb. Maybe the pain is so bad that you can barely walk!

For people with sciatica, this nightmare scenario is a reality. Sciatica is a type of lumbar radiculopathy (i.e., nerve pain) resulting from damage or irritation to the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down the back of your leg. It affects between 1% – 5% of the population.

Sciatica can be debilitating. In addition to intense pain, it severely limits your mobility — some people may struggle to get around at all. And because it results from nerve damage, it can also cause numbness, tingling, and other sensations in the leg.

The good news is that physical therapy at Pro-Active Physical Therapy is one of the best treatment options for addressing sciatic pain. Unlike pain medication, it doesn’t simply mask the symptoms — it seeks to resolve the underlying cause of your sciatic pain so that you have lasting relief.

Are you ready to say goodbye to sciatic pain for good? Call us to set up your initial evaluation today — and let us get to the root of your sciatica!

When Should I See a Physical Therapist About Sciatica?

Person experiencing sciatic pain

As with most musculoskeletal pains, sooner is better. Many people try to ride out sciatic pain by taking pain medication and resting, which can actually be counterproductive and further worsen the underlying cause of their symptoms. By seeking early intervention, you can start feeling better faster.

You should also pay attention to changes in the severity of your pain or shifting sensations in your back and leg. Because sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, these changing symptoms can indicate that something is happening to the nerve itself.

Common Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica can cause pain in the lower back, buttocks, and leg, usually affecting only one side of the body. The pain may be dull, throbbing, aching, sharp, or shooting. Other common symptoms include numbness or tingling, restricted range of motion in the back, difficulty standing up straight, walking with a limp, and increased pain after remaining in one position for an extended period.

One symptom you should never ignore is any loss of bladder or bowel control accompanied by sciatic pain. This can indicate a serious medical emergency that may require surgical intervention. Fortunately, such situations are rare, and most cases of sciatica respond well to conservative physical therapy treatment.

Physical Therapy: Frontline Treatment for Sciatica

One of the reasons physical therapy is so effective for sciatic pain is that it focuses on resolving the underlying cause. During your first appointment, our therapists will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine what may be irritating, pinching, or compressing the sciatic nerve.

We’ll discuss your symptoms, including when they started and the exact sensations you’re experiencing, and perform movement screens to evaluate mobility, muscle weakness, nerve activity, posture, balance, and gait. These assessments provide a complete picture of your condition and help us develop a personalized treatment plan.

Once we understand what’s causing your symptoms, we’ll create a customized approach designed to address the source of your pain rather than simply masking it.

The most common cause of sciatica is a lumbar herniated disc. When one of the discs between the vertebrae becomes damaged and bulges outward, it can irritate the nearby sciatic nerve. By addressing the disc issue through targeted therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and progressive rehabilitation, physical therapy can help relieve sciatic pain and restore normal function.

Kids Heading Back to School? Here’s How to Help Them Avoid Back Pain

Between laptops, tablets, and old-fashioned textbooks, heavy backpacks are a reality for students heading back to school. Improper backpack use can contribute to upper back pain and discomfort, but a few simple habits can help keep your child comfortable and pain-free throughout the school year.

🎒

Find the Right Fit

Most kids choose backpacks based on style, but fit matters. A properly fitting backpack should rest on the hips rather than hanging from the shoulders to help distribute weight more effectively.

⚖️

Keep It Light

A backpack should not exceed 10% of your child’s body weight. Consider weighing the backpack periodically to ensure it isn’t overloaded with unnecessary items.

🧍

Encourage Good Posture

Help your child practice proper posture by lifting their chest and sternum toward the sky. This simple cue encourages better spinal alignment and reduces strain.

Need More Backpack Tips?

Call Pro-Active Physical Therapy to schedule a personalized assessment. Our physical therapists can identify areas of weakness, movement limitations, or postural issues that may contribute to backpack-related discomfort and provide strategies to help your child stay active and pain-free this school year.
